June 2026
The Days Are Still Getting Longer!
June has arrived, so enjoy your long days while you still can because every future month of this year will see our days becoming shorter until late December!
Area Food Banks
Late last year your Newcomers’ Board decided to help both the Sequim and Port Angeles Food Banks. There are boxes for both Food Banks at our monthly Luncheons, and Newcomers’ will transport your contributions to both food banks. The most important food items needed throughout the year are canned proteins (tuna, chicken, beans, stews), fruits (canned, dried, applesauce), canned veggies, peanut butter, pasta, cereal, hygiene items (diapers, wipes, soap), and pet food. We have contributed $262 plus 357 pounds of food thus far. Let’s keep it going, and thanks to everyone who has helped!
June Luncheon
Our June Luncheon was yet another one for the books! Not only did we have the largest turnout of the year (37) but we also had a great guest speaker. Doug Cockburn, the owner of New Dungeness Nursery in Sequim, walked members through a thorough discussion of what native plants were appropriate for various landscaping situations. In addition to that he brought a number of plants along with him as part of his demonstration.
Reminder for New Members:
There are no Newcomers’ Luncheons in July or August. On August 4th we will have our annual picnic at the Salt Creek Recreation Area County Park Picnic Pavilion. This is a great time to enjoy food, the outdoors, and each other. It is also the last opportunity to renew your club membership if you haven’t already done so. More details about the August Picnic will be forthcoming in a Picnic Broadcast and in my July President’s Message.
May Appetizer
I’d like to give a shout out to Pearl Bare for hosting an outstanding Newcomers’ Appetizer Event in late May. Not only was there a great turnout with marvelous conversations, the view of the Strait from her home was spectacular.
Donations to Charity
Newcomers’ will be distributing the money (about $400) we raised through our 50/50 program this last year to two worthy charities in the very near future. If you know of a worthy organization, please let me know.
President’s Pick June
Our Special President’s Pick for June is on Saturday, June 20 at 1:30 PM. George Washington (Vern Frykholm) will be speaking at the Historic Sequim Prairie Grange at 290 MacLeay Road in Sequim. This free event was organized by Newcomers’ Member Rich Snow. Many Newcomers’ Club Members already know General Washington from a presentation he did for our club at our first in-person meeting coming out of the Covid Pandemic. I can guarantee that this is an event worth attending.
President’s Pick July
Our President’s Pick for July is the Kathy Metz-Carson Memorial Port Angeles Underground Tour on July 17 at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased at the Port Angeles Visitor Center just prior to the tour. Please RSVP on our website, olympicnewcomers.org.
For other events in June, please check the Events Calendar.
Finally, getting the word out about our wonderful friendship organization is our continuing challenge for our members. Membership renewal is upon us, so spread the good news!
