Just about everyone learned to play pinochle differently, so the group reached the following accord regarding the rules.
- We play single-deck pinochle according to Hoyle.
- Once the bid is won, the winners pass four cards.
- The starting bid is 250.
We welcome everyone who knows pinochle or wants to learn. However, we strongly suggest that beginners attend a teaching session before attending a regular activity. We have these events as often as necessary – usually as soon as we have enough students. For more information or to ask about joining the group, contact Pinochle activity chair Nancy Elwert.
To simplify the coordination of our games, the group elected to hold pinochle on the last Friday of each month, (with the exception of November and December) starting at 1:00 pm and ending roughly at 4:00 pm (unless the group decides otherwise). Each month the host will send out an email notifying players of the location, and each person who wishes to play will reply to the email announcing their intent to attend. If the total is not divisible by four, the hostess will notify the last players to sign up that they will not be able to play that month.
Our pinochle format requires groups of four. When someone shows up unannounced or brings an extra person, or when someone doesn’t show up at all, it affects the whole group. If you have committed to play pinochle in any given month but cannot make it for any reason, or if you would like to bring a new person not currently in the group, you are obligated to call the host or hostess as early as possible. There is no excuse for failure to make this call. A non-Newcomers member can play if he or she isn’t replacing a member who wants to play. Members who neglect this responsibility twice will be asked to leave the group.
