May 2026
The Grass is Growing!
It’s May in the Evergreen State! Trees are fully leafed out, grass is growing, flowers are blooming, and the sun doesn’t set until after 8:30 PM. It’s a great time to be outside and take in the beauty of the Olympic Peninsula.
Frank Cimino
As all of you know, Newcomers’ lost a very dear member at the beginning of this month. Newcomers’ Club Members will miss Frank Cimino. He was always a welcome participant in any gathering, and the Appetizer Events at the Cimino’s home were joyous, Newcomers’ family gatherings. Frank enjoyed hearing what other Club Members were doing, and he generously shared his own experiences. His warmth and welcoming demeanor will be with us whenever we think of him, and our hearts go out to his wife, Sue.
Area Food Banks
Late last year your Newcomers’ Board decided to help both the Sequim and Port Angeles Food Banks. There are boxes for both Food Banks at our monthly Luncheons, and Newcomers’ will transport your contributions to both food banks. The most important food items needed throughout the year are canned proteins (tuna, chicken, beans, stews), fruits (canned, dried, applesauce), canned veggies, peanut butter, pasta, cereal, hygiene items (diapers, wipes, soap), and pet food. We have contributed $232 plus 275 pounds of food thus far. Let’s keep it going, and thanks to everyone who has helped!
April Luncheon
Our April Luncheon was another one for the books! Not only did we have an excellent turnout, but our fabulous guest speaker Phyllis Bernard and her husband Dann May rejoined the Newcomers’ Club! That makes 10 new members as we enter our membership renewal campaign for 2026-27.
Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra
Many Newcomers’ Members attended the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra’s April 11 concert at the Field Arts and Events Hall for which Jonathon Pasternack and Morgan Bartholik provided us free tickets. The concert was magnificent!! A number of us subsequently bought tickets for PASO’s May 2 presentation “Tosca in Concert” which was equally amazing. At least a dozen Newcomers were present for that performance. Season tickets for PASO’s 2026-27 will go on sale on June 15, and I encourage members to support our excellent local symphony.
May 2026 Bowling
Our Newcomers’ Bowling group achieved a first in May as each Newcomer bowled over 100 in the same round! We are the champions . . . we are the champions . . . of the world.
Well, not really, but we do have a lot of fun. Come join us on the second Tuesday of each month at Laurel Lanes at noon.
President’s Pick
Our President’s Pick for July is the Kathy Metz-Carson Memorial Port Angeles Underground Tour on July 17 at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased at the Port Angeles Visitor Center just prior to the tour. Details are on our website, olympicnewcomers.org.
For other events in May, please check the Events Calendar.
Finally, getting the word out about our wonderful friendship organization is our continuing challenge to our members. Spread the good news!
